Digital safety

Patton Middle School values the partnership we have with parents.  To help you navigate the endlessly shifting media landscape, we recommend the resources of Common Sense Media, which is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology.

Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week, consuming (and creating) media content that has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

As educators, we believe helping students learn how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century. We know families often need help understanding and navigating the problems and possibilities of raising children in the digital age.

In September 2018, Common Sense Media released findings from an extensive survey about social media use among American teenages. Click here to read more.

The video library from Common Sense Media is also a great resource to start conversations between parents, students and staff about safety and responsibility when using technology. Below are just a few to get you started.
